I used vegas to make my mp3's better quality, only downside is that it's a 5x larger file

You can't make mp3 audio better, to compress it, some data is removed that cant be got back without needing the original uncompressed version. It's not physically possible.

Although better is subjective, I'm using it as an objective measure of the audio quality in this case

erm.... where can I start....

Vegas is not really an audio software... From the sony studios, there is soundforge, on the opensource side, there is audacity.

Now the other cold cow... You cannot, ever, make gold out of trash, by this I mean, if you have an mp3 with like 128 or even 192 or rare cases of 320kbps stream rates, converting them into wav, pcm or aac, DOES NOT bring them the lost quality over compression. Period.

However, converting original wav (or any other RAW audio file born that way, eg, cd ripped) into flac, does make a difference, I usually use 320kpbs for high quality mp3 compressed with joint stereo.

It's possible that Vegas adds some EQ/FX magic that makes it kind of 'sound' better (different), and indeed these might be put on at a high quality (onto the mp3 but with the effects at non-compressed quality) and then exported as wav, but as Tunes said, it most definitely will not be better quality ever. It's not logically possible.

Sounds like a trick in the software that aims to give it a film-like EQ master? I'd imagine it's mainly boosting the bass...
Please excuse my posts .. I try, often unwisely, to write in E-Prime :S
